Engine Performance and Emissions Detailed Measurements Onboard a High Speed Ferry

ABSTRACT

One important issue for marine industry today is the evaluation of marine power plants in terms of performance and emissions, and this can be achieved by detailed in-situ measurements.  The Laboratory of Marine Engineering (LME) has developed a portable measurement unit for shipboard measurements of all performance and emissions parameters of a marine multi-cylinder engine. Performance measurements can be used to evaluate whether the engine is operating properly and to correlate the emissions measurements with the engine load.

In this study LME installed portable equipment (i.e. emissions analyzers, shaft strain gauge and piezoelectric sensors) onboard a high-speed vessel, in order to measure emissions and engine performance during normal service. Data from a complete voyage were stored for post-processing. The voyage included a circular route from Piraeus port to three islands and back which lasted approximately nine hours and included high speed cruising, port approaching at low speed and maneuvering, idling for unloading and loading of the vessel and immediate departure afterwards (for each port).

The collected data refer to the composition of the exhaust gas, the opacity of the exhaust gas at the open end of the exhaust gas stack, the torque and speed on the engine's shaft and the in-cylinder pressures. These data are discussed in detail in this study, and will be further utilized as background data for the design and evaluation of emissions' reduction systems.

1. INTRODUCTION

Detailed emissions monitoring is of great interest because of raising environmental awareness and increasingly stringent legislation. Previous campaign of shipboard emissions measurements are reported in [1], [2] and [3]. These papers were focused on the concentration of specific chemical species and did not perform a complete analysis of exhaust gas for the entire operating profile of an engine. In the past, LME developed a system for NOx estimation through performance measurements and engine simulations [4]. Continuing these efforts, LME has developed a portable measurement unit for shipboard measurements of emissions parameters of marine engines [5], [6].

In the present work emissions and performance measurements were conducted concurrently, aiming to the correlation of engine emissions with the imposed engine load. LME has undertaken, in cooperation with ASL, the installation procedure of experimental equipment on-board one of the company's ships and collect data during normal service. This included a circular route from Piraeus port to three islands. The entire voyage lasted approximately 9 hours and it included high speed cruising, port approaching at low speed, maneuvering and immediate departure afterwards. The collected data refer to the composition of the exhaust gas (CO2, O2, CO, HCs, NOx, SO2), the opacity of the exhaust gas at the open end of the exhaust gas stack, the torque and speed on the engine's shaft and the in-cylinder pressure.

Το καθιερωμένο βραβείο ΕΛ.Ι.Ν.Τ απονεμήθηκε φέτος κατά τη διάρκεια του Επίσημου Δείπνου στο Ναυτικό Όμιλος Ελλάδος στον κ. Αθανάσιο Μαρτίνο για τη μεγάλη του προσφορά στο ναυτιλιακό χώρο αλλά και για το σημαντικό κοινωνικό έργο.
